Calcium Antacid Ingredients
Researched and Written by Brenda Templin

This report is on calcium carbonate, chamomile, fennel and ginger, which are key ingredients in Melaleuca's CALMICID® ANTACID PLUS+.

In my research, I found that careful consideration should be used when choosing an antacid. Chemically, calcium cannot be given by itself, but must be connected to another substance called a salt. These salts are simply carriers of the calcium. A variety of different carriers are commonly used in the formulation of antacids, some being carbonate, citrate, gluconate and glubionate. The carrier of your antacid is important for several reasons.

I found that, although calcium citrate is more readily absorbed by some people (primarily those over 65 and lacking hydrochloric acid in their stomachs), calcium carbonate contains more elemental calcium. For example, calcium supplements using carbonate as the carrier supply 40% elemental calcium while citrate carriers supply 20%-24%. Others supply significantly less, 9% in the case of gluconate. Unless the amount of elemental calcium is listed on the bottle (most are not), the amount listed is the total weight of the calcium and the carrier. This is especially important to note if taking as a supplement to increase calcium in your system.

Chamomile, Fennel, & Ginger - Key Ingredients in Calcium Calmicid® Antacid Plus+
This is another great article by David L. Hoffmann B.Sc. (Hons), M.N.I.M.H. "Chamomile". According to David Hoffman, "Clinical and laboratory research demonstrates statistically what the herbalist knows experientially, that chamomile will reduce inflammation, colic pain and protect against ulcer formation in the whole of the digestive tract."

In this article, "Ginger", David L. Hoffmann B.Sc. (Hons), M.N.I.M.H. details uses for the herb ginger.

In this excerpt from Staying Healthy With Nutrition , Elson M. Haas M.D. details the benefits of many herbs, including ginger. Not only is ginger effective in improving weak digestion, but preliminary research indicates that it also acts as an antioxidant and can help lower cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease "Plants".
Elson M. Haas, M.D. practices Integrated Medicine and is founder and director of the Preventive Medical Center of Marin, San Rafael, CA. He incorporates natural and pharmaceutical therapies in his medical practice and has authored several books. He writes and lectures extensively on topics relating to Preventive Medicine, Nutrition, and Detoxification and has appeared on numerous radio and television news and talk shows.

This article about fennel is by David L. Hoffmann B.Sc. (Hons), M.N.I.M.H. "Fennel".

In this article, Kathi Keville and Mindy Green talk about the benefits of herbs in aiding digestion.
Kathy Keville has studied herbs for more than 30 years, is author of several books, is a founding professional member of the American Herbalist Guild and travels throughout North America teaching seminars. Comments From Your Researcher

Something to avoid in an antacid is aluminum hydroxide. Although aluminum hydroxide can be useful for specific conditions, it should be used only when prescribed and monitored by a doctor. Clinical studies show that frequent use can be harmful, especially in combination with citrate, regardless of whether the citrate is the carrier of the antacid, or comes from other sources such as orange juice or grapefruit juice.

An antacid containing natural oyster-shell or dolomite should be avoided since they may contain significant levels of lead.
